This is my submission for the sample competition by @taetro and @343studio.
I had a colonoscopy+gastroscopy earlier today, so hadn’t eaten anything since yesterday breakfast, plus had to gulp down 2 litres of disgusting prep. The sedatives they gave me had me loopy for a bit, so I lay in bed after coming back and watched “Freedom Writers”. I finally showered, grabbed my laptop/launchkey and headed to my local starbucks where I had an hour to basically complete this beat for the challenge. Also since tomorrow is my birthday, I know I’d be busy with kids and won’t get a chance to work on this. So here it is.
I titled it “Freedom Writers” because the movie stuck with me. My own childhood experiences from my early school years aren’t the greatest, and now that I have school going kids, it just spoke to me a personal level. I tried infusing some of that in the beat. I used the provided sample to play the opening melody, and I sliced out this breath to use it as a soft crash. I used a “sarangi” sample in simpler to create the middle high pitched melody parts. I wrote this bassline, and used Ableton wavetable in the end with some pitch bend modulation.
